Itaibara Village

Designated as a traditional architectures preservation district, Itaibara Village is one of Japan’s very few mountain villages whose appearance has remained unspoiled by development. Recent restoration projects aim to preserve the authentic traditional structures as indelible cultural heritage. Shops such as the little crisp-water tearoom housed in a restored hundred-year-old building, and the restaurant open only on Sundays serving authentic farm fare with rice cooked on an old-fashioned hearth, are certainly worth a visit. It’s a lovely experience even just stopping in for tea.
