Japanese Indigo Blue Dye Studio chizu blue

A woman-owned indigo dyeing studio in Chizu Town. The clear indigo color produced by the fresh water flowing from dense forests and the home-made natural dye made from Tadeai tree seeds is a distinctive feature of the area. The wind blowing through the trees, the murmuring of the clear stream, and the pleasant blue sky are all part of Chizu’s famous scenery. To evoke this feeling, the studio produces a variety of products such as noren, purses, bags, tenugui (hand towels), shawls and clothing with flower, leaf and cedar motifs. There is a workshop in an old townhouse on Chizujuku Street, where visitors can take part in their own indigo dyeing experience.
