Hakota Doll Workshop is located in the corner of the Shirakabe Storehouses and offers visitors the chance to watch how Hakota dolls are made, view displays, purchase their own dolls and even try out face-painting the dolls themselves. The workshop also produces papier-mâché items, such as rabbits. Hakota dolls are believed to have been made by Jihe Bingoya, a peddler from Bingo during the Temmei Era (1781-1789) who was taken by the pleasant and graceful young women in Kurayoshi. Known as ‘Hako-san’, the dolls are a familiar playmate for children and also serve as a good luck charm to wish for their safe upbringing without any injury or illness.
