Folklore Umbrella Museum

The origin of Yodoe umbrellas began in 1821 when Shuzo Kurayoshiya from Kurayoshi opened an umbrella shop. Yodoe umbrellas are mostly used as Bangasa (a type of coarse oilpaper umbrella) or Janomegasa umbrellas, both of which are highly practical, durable and long-lasting. The umbrellas are known for their distinctive bull’s eye design (plum blossoms, tortoise shell) and unique thread decoration. In 1985, the Yodoe Umbrella Preservation Society was founded to pass on the production techniques of this craft that has continued to this day. Each umbrella is handmade using locally grown bamboo, from the individual umbrella bone to the final finishing touches. There are also tours of the production process and a miniature umbrella making experience available for guests to understand the charm of Japanese Wagasa umbrellas!
