This museum houses approximately 12,000 works by Shoji Ueda, a photographer from Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, including introductory and special exhibitions. Ueda’s unique ‘staged photography’, widely known as ‘Ueda-cho’ (Ueda style), is highly acclaimed both within Japan and overseas. The museum building was designed by architect Shin Takamatsu and resembles a giant camera taking pictures of Mt. Daisen, the famed mountain of the Sanin region. Located inside the museum is a video exhibition room mimicking the inside of a large camera and an area where visitors can experience Ueda’s playful spirit by taking ‘staged photographs’ with the upside-down Mt. Daisen in the background.
