Hosshoji-yaki Kaike Kiln

View as List

Located close to Kaike Onsen in Yonago city, the Hosshoji-yaki Kaike Kiln was originally built in 1961 by Yoshiaki Ando (a 2nd generation Hosshoji potter) as a branch kiln of the Shoukagama Kiln of Hosshoji-yaki. The pottery here is produced using new techniques, such as mixing Kaike sand and black sand from the mouth of the Hino River into the clay and glazes. Yuzo (a 2nd generation potter of the Kaike kiln) is involved in not just pottery making, but also holding pottery classes and contributing to the spread of Yonago’s craft culture by providing opportunities for tourists to experience pottery making. Seiji (a 3rd generation potter of the Kaike kiln) has been actively organizing exhibitions with other ceramic artists of his generation within the prefecture and has also taken over the running of the pottery classes.
