Daisen Japanese Umbrella Illumination

Visit the Daisenji Temple during the summer Obon festival (a celebration honoring the souls of departed ancestors) to witness a truly otherworldly sight. After sundown, about a hundred and twenty vividly colored traditional umbrellas called wagasa are illuminated along the main approach to create a surreal landscape of ghostly hues. It’s a mystical scene made all the more impressive by the backdrop of the stately, ornate temple structures.
